Creedence Clearwater Revival’s original version features a gentle, steady rhythm and clear chord progressions, making it a classic choice for beginner guitarists.
Chords
You’ll need: C, G, F, Am, Am7, Em.
All are open chords, suitable for beginners. Am7 is just Am with the open G string (remove your finger from the G string).
Strumming Pattern
Use a simple down-down-up-up-down-up pattern throughout. Try D D U U D U for each measure. Keep your hand moving steadily for a relaxed groove.
Chord Transitions
Focus on smooth changes between C and G, as these repeat often. Practice moving from Am/Am7 to F and back to C. F can be played as F major (barre) or the easy F (xx3211), whichever feels comfortable.
Techniques & Tips
- Count four beats per chord. Some chords last two bars (listen for the change).
- For the intro and interludes, play each chord once or twice, letting them ring.
- Practice the chorus separately: the changes between C, Em, Am, and Am7 are quick.
- If F is difficult, try the easy F shape to keep your transitions smooth.
- Keep your strumming light for a relaxed, flowing sound.
Play along with the original recording to match tempo and feel. Have fun!
